Sydney IoT & Smart Systems Workshop 2026

A hands-on workshop at the Sydney node introducing students and young professionals to industrial IoT, edge computing, and smart sensor systems.

Sydney IoT & Smart Systems Workshop 2026

The Sydney IoT & Smart Systems Workshop 2026 brought together 50+ students and young professionals for a full day of hands-on training in industrial IoT and edge computing, hosted at the University of Sydney.

About the workshop

Run by the Sydney node under the IEEE IES Hubs & Nodes program, the workshop gave participants practical, build-it-yourself exposure to the sensor-to-cloud pipeline used in modern smart-manufacturing and infrastructure systems.

What participants built

  • A working edge sensor node streaming live data over MQTT
  • A simple anomaly-detection model running on-device
  • A cloud dashboard visualizing the sensor fleet in real time

Programme

  • 09:00 — Registration and welcome
  • 09:30 — Industrial IoT fundamentals
  • 10:30 — Hands-on: building an edge sensor node
  • 12:30 — Lunch and networking
  • 13:30 — Edge AI and on-device inference
  • 15:00 — Hands-on: cloud dashboard and alerts
  • 16:30 — Showcase, Q&A, and closing

Speakers

  • Dr. Priya Nair — University of Sydney (Workshop lead)
  • Eng. Tom Whitfield — Industry mentor, smart infrastructure

Outcomes

  • 50+ students trained in the industrial IoT pipeline
  • 6 student project ideas selected for follow-up mentoring
  • 15 new IES student memberships initiated at the Sydney node
